If you've aspirations to be a professional web designer with the right credentials for today's employment market, you'll need to study Adobe Dreamweaver.

For professional applications you will require an in-depth and thorough understanding of the entire Adobe Web Creative Suite. This includes (but is by no means restricted to) Flash and Action Script. If your goal is to become an Adobe Certified Professional or an Adobe Certified Expert you'll find these skills are vital.

To become a well-rounded web professional however, you'll have to get more diverse knowledge. You'll need to bolt on programming skills like HTML, PHP and database engines like MySQL. A working knowledge of E-Commerce and Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) will also improve your CV and employability.

Usually, trainers will provide a bunch of books and manuals. This isn't very interesting and isn't the best way to go about achieving retention.

Research has time and time again shown that becoming involved with our studies, to utilise all our senses, is much more conducive to long-term memory.

Find a course where you'll get a host of CD and DVD based materials - you'll start with videos of instructor demonstrations, followed by the chance to fine-tune your skills in fully interactive practice sessions.

It would be silly not to view some of the typical study materials provided before you hand over your cheque. You should expect instructor demonstrations, video tutorials and interactive audio-visual sections with practice modules.

Purely on-line training should be avoided. Ideally, you should opt for CD and DVD ROM courseware where obtainable, enabling them to be used at your convenience - ISP quality varies, so you don't want to be totally reliant on a good broadband connection all the time.

A ridiculously large number of organisations are all about the certification, and completely miss what it's all actually about - which will always be getting the job or career you want. Always start with where you want to get to - don't make the journey more important than where you want to get to.

Imagine training for just one year and then end up doing the job for 20 years. Avoid the mistake of taking what may be a program of interest to you and then put 10-20 years into a job you don't like!

Stay focused on where you want to get to, and build your study action-plan from that - don't do it back-to-front. Stay focused on the end-goal and study for a career you'll enjoy for years to come.

Seek guidance and advice from an experienced professional, even if you have to pay - as it's a lot cheaper and safer to discover early on whether a chosen track will suit, instead of finding out following two years of study that you're doing entirely the wrong thing and have wasted years of effort.

If your advisor doesn't question you thoroughly - it's likely they're just a salesperson. If they wade straight in with a specific product before learning about your history and experience, then you know it's true.

With a little live experience or qualifications, you could discover that your appropriate starting-point is now at a different level to a new student.

If this is your opening attempt at studying for an IT examination then you should consider whether to cut your teeth on some basic Microsoft package and Windows skills first.

It's essential to have an authorised exam preparation system as part of your training package.

Make sure that the mock exams are not just posing the correct questions from the right areas, but ask them in the same way that the proper exam will structure them. It throws trainees if they're met with completely different formats and phraseologies.

You should make sure you analyse your depth of understanding through quizzes and mock ups of exams prior to taking the actual exam.
