- Appalachian Landscape Oil Paintings
I grew up in the foothills of the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains. At the top of the Blue Ridge runs the Appalachian Trail. The mountains of Appalachia are some of the oldest in the world. I always under estimated the age of these mountains just because they were not as notorious as the likes of the Himalayas. They have instead a soft, well worn wisdom. Some of the most beautiful countryside you will ever see is here. There is nothing that can compare with the beauty of an Appalachian spring…daily. I couldn't create landscape oil paintings fast enough. All the beauty would completely overwhelm me.Springtime here brings an abundance of green shades that are beyond naming or counting. I resorted to painting faster using acrylics many times just so I could capture all the spring beauty before it faded.
There is no doubt that all this beauty influenced my path as a painter. I often felt I was living in a painting. I started painting in 1976 when I was forced to change my major to Art from Environmental Science. I failed calculus three times, and so went my direction in environmental science. It appeared that working with the environment would now become the creation of landscape artwork. I always felt that art chose me instead of me choosing it. It wasn't long that I was drawn to the beauty of Appalachian landscapes everywhere I turned. The beauty of the world in which you live is confirmed by the act of studying and painting nature. Your eyes, and soul, get trained to see beauty everywhere. Sometimes an ordinary scene I always perceived as nothing much became extraordinary, and something worthy of becoming an original landscape.
When I was after immediate gratification, I would choose to work with acrylics over oils. I didn't always have the patience for big oil paintings that could take months to finish. It was a good twenty years before that patience arrived, and my focus shifted to mostly landscape oil paintings. Painting with oils becomes a journey to your destination instead of an immediate outcome when painting with acrylics. My journey with a painting is usually unknown, and I often love this. Then I know I am headed for a ride into the unknown. If I just go with the flow, something always amazing unfolds…much the way life often flows.
About eight years ago, I discovered aqua oils, much to my delight and surprise. I paid a visit to an artist's working studio one day, and the smell of oils was not noticeable. The artist willingly shared with me his secret of aqua oil paints with me. I had steered away from working with traditional oil paints because of the smell to which I had become sensitive, but I was missing them,too. I was getting frustrated when working on canvas using acrylics. Aqua oils opened up a whole new world for me with landscape paintings. I no longer had to worry about how fast my paints were drying so I could focus on my lovely skies. It's amazing how just your knowledge of the medium with which you work expands your vision of the world around you. Now, I would study at length a landscape vista while thinking and seeing how I would blend the colors to create an affect. My journey into a painting would start when the inspiration arouse to express it in a painting. There are people who are most curious as to why an artist chooses to paint a particular scene or subject. It is a challenge to describe this to others. But all of a sudden a particular scene simply satisfies your soul, and your eyes are filled with contentment. All the pieces come together, and you see the original landscape in your mind where it rests until you give it life as a painting.
My native home is in the heart of these Appalachian mountains and hills. It's beauty and nature fed and sustained me for much of my life. If any of my Appalachian landscape oil paintings arouse in you a yearning for these mountains and fields, then I have managed to paint these without losing sight of their gifts.
